The Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Place.

Initially, this work may look more like a difficult scholarly challenge than a new pop project from a musician who just had a last hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Broken across four separate parts and sung in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus exploring female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently via the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a vast list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the work of contemporary artists appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry intellectual posturing feels almost a miracle, with full credit belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to fuse historical sounds with the present, the scale feel far higher here, and the balancing act more dramatic. What really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with comedic force. The song immediately segues to the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album is that you never quite know—nor want to predict—where it will go next."

Nearly each song concludes at a completely different place from how it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her earlier rhythmic work begins off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its rough edges.

The Bridge Of Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals skyward. This feat gets echoed on another expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes time to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While other major releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record offers a lavish banquet where the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter between discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day musical from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
